Buzz Wins ASA Class D In Itasca

ITASCA: Buzz went 4-1 to win a bid to the ASA D East Nationals being held over the Labor Day Weekend. They opened play with a victory over the Ice House Dogs by the final score of score of 23-6 as Dave Lehpamer (3-4) and Ross Anthos (4-4)leading the hitting attack against their old team. In game number two Buzz also posted victory number two as they defeated Pla Ball by the final score of 14-10. This victory was bittersweet for the Buzz ball club because outfielder Joe Nardi tore two tendons in his ankle during game. Buzz looked to be in control of this game before Pla Ball started to heat up at end of game loading the bases with the tying run coming up, but Mike Albertini made a fine running catch to finish the game and avoid a come back by them. Hitting star for the Buzz squad in his game were Rob Wells 4-4, and Mike Hornung with three hits.
Game number three was the showdown between the last two unbeaten team left in this tournament with Buzz and Roundin Third squaring off in the first of three head to head contests. Defense was the call card of this game for both teams as they strived to hold the other one down while struggling to gain an advantage. At times it seemed like no one wanted to win this game as it moved into extra innings. In the bottom of the ninth inning Joe Renc lead off with a double. Jeff Riveria moved him over to third base with a fly ball out. Rounding Third than walked the next two batters bringing Tony Luciano to the dish. Luciano came through with a single to right to win the game for Buzz by a final score 6-5.
Rounding Third now had to play Caps/ Fury with the winner earning a shot at Buzz and the tournament title. Roundin' Third came out on top in this game setting the stage for game number two between Buzz and Roundin' Third in this tournament.
Rounding Third had their sticks going along with their defense with their outfield covering a lot of ground and catching all balls that were hit towards the gaps winning the game by a large margin. This forced the need to play the 'if necessary game' in order to determine which of these two teams would win the tournament and the ASA National berth that goes to the champion. On a windy (blowing in) field of play Buzz was able to push ten runners across the pay-station behind the key hits by John Rivelli, Hornung, Herb and make it stand up for a 10-3 win to claim the ASA National berth and the tournament title.
Buzz will be playing at the ASA Men's Class D Eastern National Tournament in Salem, Virginia.
The top hitters and defensive players for the Buzz ball club in this tournament were; Rick O'Rourke who made some great grabs in outfield batted .800 (HR with 8 RBI), Dave Lehpamer .750 with 7 RBI, Tony Luciano .750, and Mike Hornung .722.
The Buzz ball club would like to thank Jeff at Grand Central for his sponsorship of the team along with Al's Pizza and Buzz club Chicago, with out them we would be playing horseshoes on the weekends.

Tournament runner-up Roundin' Third opened play with an 807 win over the Bandits as Torry Caniglia, Matt Goumas, Roy Ambrose and Kyle Kimme all had three hits each to lead the attack for the victors. In their second contest of this tournament Roundin' Third beat Caps/Fury 15-4 as Jeff Streul and Dave Ninesling both went 3-3 to lead Roundin' Third into the winner's bracket championship game.
Roundin' Third stubbed their toe in this game losing to Buzz 6-5. They needed to regroup quickly and they did just that as they had to play a rematch with Caps/Fury with the winner earning the right to challenge Buzz in the championship game. Roundin' Third took care of business winning 17-8 as Kimme 4-4 with 4 RBI led the way with hitting help from his teammates Dave Yukinis and Tom Samson who both produced 3-4 efforts from the plate in this win.
Roundin' Third extracted a little revenge on the Buzz ball club by defeating them 14-4 behind the hitting of Caniglia 5-5, as Yuen, Streul and Andy Green all chipped in with four hits each in this win.
Now the 'if necessary game' needed to be played in order to determine which of these two teams would be the champion of this tournament. That team was Buzz by a final score of 10-3 in spite of a 2-2 effort by Scott White for Roundin' Third.
For the tournament the top hitters for Roundin' Third were Matt Goumas .667, Kyle Kimme .652, and Jeff Streul .619.
