Oswego Inn Wins USSSA Class E In Joliet

Nine Teams, On Day National Qualifier At Inwood Sports Complex

JOLIET: The Oswego Inn traveled to Joliet to participate at the USSSA Men's Class E National Qualifier held at the Inwood Sports Complex in Joliet on May 28th and came home as the undefeated champions (5-0) of this nine team tournament. Jerry's Kids/Joe's Dugout (4-2) from Elwood finished in second place with the Beavers (2-2) from Lombard taking home third place honors and the One Timers/Hubbs & Henry Tap (2-2) from Joliet finishing in fourth place.
The Oswego Inn drew the brackets only pigtail game to start their day off and in this game they defeated Miles Construction from Lockport 17-1 in three inning by the run rule to advance into the regular bracket. Oswego Inn's leading hitters in this win were (LC) Tim Ficke, (SS) Rob Mangan with 2 RBI, and (LF) Dustin Brozenic with 3 RBI, all with three hits each as (C) Glenn Hoffmann 2 RBI, (RC) Tim Schmidt and (1B) Duey Astling all chipped in with 2 RBI each during this victory.
Oswego Inn than squared off with Jerry's Kids/Joe's Dugout in the first round of tournament play and came away with a 19-14 win to move into the semifinals of the winner's bracket portion of this tournament. The Oswego inn ball club was led at the plate during this win by the hitting of Mangan with 4 hits, as his teammates Astling with 4 RBI, (AH) and Chris Johnson each had three hits and Hoffmann added 3 RBI, with Ficke collecting2 RBI in this win
Oswego Inn than locked horns with M & S Xpress with the champions to be posting an 12-1 six inning, run rule win up onto the bracket board to put them into undefeated game of the tournament. Oswego Inn's top hitter in this win were Ficke, Mangan with 2 RBI, Hoffmann, Schmidt, and (RF) Mike Brown with 4 RBI, with two hits each
M & S Xpress made it to this game by defeating Ambrosia Bar & Grill 16-9 in the first round of tournament play.
In the battle between the tournaments last two unbeaten teams it was the Oswego Inn stopping the Beavers 15-7 to give them a spot in the tournament championship game against whichever team would win the loser's bracket to challenge them in the title contest. Oswego Inn leading hitters in this win were, Astling and Johnson with four hits each as (2B) Chad Hooper added three hits and Brozenic chipped in with 4 RBI. The Beavers made it to the winner's bracket finals by defeating One Timers/Hubbs & Henry Tap 8-4 in the first round of play and than beating the Village Pub 15-5 in their semifinal game of the winner's bracket.
Oswego Inn found a rematch with Jerry's Kids/Joe's Dugout was their next order of business in the championship game, with the Oswego Inn completing their undefeated run to the title with a 15-9 win. The top hitters for the Oswego Inn ball club in this game were, Mangan with 3 RBI, Hoffmann with three hits each, as Astling, and Brown added two hits each with Hoffmann contributing with 4 RBI, and Brozenic adding 3 RBI to the victors team totals.
The champions Oswego Inn were led during this tournament by the hitting of Rob Mangan .778 with 9 RBI, Duey Astling .647 with 11 RBI, Glenn Hoffmann .611 with 11 RBI, Tim Ficke .588, Chad Hooper .583, Chris Johnson .556 with 6 RBI, Dustin Brozenic with 10 RBI and Mike Brown with 8 RBI.
Jerry's Kids/Joe's Dugout opened tournament play with a first round loss to the Oswego Inn 19-14 to start this tournament off on the wrong note for them. This game was tied at two runs each in the third inning when the Oswego Inn packaged a couple of miscues on defense by Jerry's Kids/Joe's Dugout with a satchel full of hits to score fourteen runs to take a commanding lead in this ball game. Jerry's Kids/Joe's Dugout battled back but could not get over that hump as they dropped their opening game in this tournament despite the hitting of Pat Walker (1B) with hits and 3 RBI, Jeremy Poch (SS) with 3 hits and 2 RBI, Ken Affrunti (AH) with 2 hits and 2 RBI and Jason Adams (LF) with 2 hits and 2 RBI.
Jerry's Kids/Joe's Dugout did not fold their tent after losing they went about doing what they needed to do in order to get back to the championship game starting with a 16-9 win over Ambrosia Bar & Grill. Jerry's Kids/Joe's Dugouts broke this game open early scoring eleven runs in their first two at bats. The leading hitters for Jerry's Kids/Joe's Dugout in this win were AH Brian Strum with 4 hits and his teammates Steve Tubman (P), Thad Kreitz (2B), and Jason Adams (LF) with three hits each during this game.
The Village Pub was excused from this tournament next at the hands of Jerry's Kids/Joe's Dugout after they had posted a 16-6 six inning win up onto the bracket board. The leading hitters in this win for Jerry's Kids/Joe's Dugout were; Poch, John Hopkins (RC), Strum, and Affrunti all had three hits each while teammates Fred Gestel (RF), Jason Adams (LF) and Aaron Hinchliffe (LC) all chipped in with two hits each during this win.
One Timers/Hubbs & Henry Tap scored four first inning runs to take the lead on Jerry's Kids/Joe's Dugout before the Elwood based ball club battled back to win 9-7. The top hitters in this win by Jerry's Kids/Joe's Dugout were; Hinchliffe, Kreitz, Poch, and Gestel with two hits each during this win.
In the game that would determine who would be opposing the Oswego Inn in the championship game it was Jerry's Kids/Joe's Dugout sending The Beaver home with third place after they beat them 13-8.
Leading the way with their bat s in this win were Affrunti with four hits as his teammates Strum (2 hits with 4 RBI), Kreitz (3 hits with 5 RBI), Adams (3 hits with 2 RBI), Hopkins (3 hits), Poch (2 hits) and Hinchliffe (2 hits) all helped out..
Jerry's Kids/Joe's Dugout had come full circle and they got a second shot at the Oswego Inn, the team that had put them into the loser's bracket in their very first game of this tournament, but the Oswego Inn used a huge nine run third inning to put Jerry's Kids/Joe's Dugouts under their boot heal before sending Jerry's Kids/Joe's Dugout back to Elwood with second place after stopping them 15-9 in the finals. The top hitters for Jerry's Kids/Joe's Dugout in this game were; Hopkins and Scott Santerelli (P) with two hits each.
Team spokesperson Santerelli said, "We had a good tournament, we battled back and took home second, we just had two bad innings in those two games against the Oswego Inn. Second place is good and we just wanted to get a few games in and that was accomplished."
For the tournament Jerry's Kids/Joe's Dugout top hitters were; Brian Strum .705 with 12 RBI, Jason Adams .619 with 10 RBI, Thad Kreitz .571 with 13 RBI, Ken Affrunti .900 with 4 RBI, John Hopkins .522 with 4 RBI, Jeremy Poch .522 with 4 RBI, Steve Tubman .556, Pat Walker .500 with 5 RBI, and Scott Santerelli .500.
