Oswego Inn Wins USSSA Class E In Sugar Grove

One Day Tournaemnt With Twelve Teams At Sugar Grove Sports Complex


Champions Of USSSA Men's Class E In Sugar Grove, Oswego Inn

SUGAR GROVE: Oswego Inn (7-1) from Oswego won their second USSSA Qualifier of the year by double dipping their league rival Ashland Pyro's (4-2) from Oswego in the finals of this twelve team tournament held at the Sugar Grove Sports Complex on June 18th. The champions passed the Men's Class E National to Iowa berth over Labor Day Weekend down to Ashland Pyro's. The Beavers (2-2) from Glen Ellyn took home third place with Triple Play Sports (2-2) from Rockford finishing in fourth place and a tie for fifth place going to both Fatty's Pub (2-2) from De Kalb and Pizza Cucina (1-2) from Oswego.
The Oswego Inn opened tournament play with a first round contest against the Country Boys a quickly dispatched them to the loser's bracket after beating them by the run rule 23-1 in four innings. Leading the attack for the Oswego Inn was (1B) Chris Johnson with 3 hits with 5 RBI, as his teammates (P) Pat Franciscy, (LC) Tim Ficke, (SS) with 4 RBI Rob Mangan, (2B) Brent Sutton with 3 RBI all collect two huts each during this win as (LF) Jimmy Williams chipped in with 3 RBI.
In their second round contest of this tournament the Oswego Inn squared off with Triple Play Sports and promptly sent them to the loser's bracket 16-6. The Oswego Inn ball club was led at the plate during this win by Mangan with 4 hits and 3 RBI, (AH) Duey Astling with 3 hits and 4 RBI, and Sutton with 2 RBI. Triple Play Sports had advanced to this second round game after receiving a first round bye in this tournament.
In a semifinal contest of the winner's bracket the Oswego Inn tasted defeat as they were beaten by The Beavers 15-12 to send them into the loser's bracket. The top offense people for the Oswego Inn in this victory were Astling 3 hits with 2 RBI, (RC) Tim Schmidt 3 hits with 3 RBI, Mangan 2 hits, Sutton 2 hits, and (RF) Mike Brown 2 hits with 2 RBI as (C) Glen Hoffman added 2 RBI to the winning total.
Once in the loser's bracket the Oswego Inn realized that one more stub of their toe would finish them they went about the business at hand as they worked their way back into contention in this tournament. Fatty's Pub exited first after they absorbed as narrow 18-17 defeat in nine innings by the Oswego Inn to leave with fifth place. The Oswego Inn top hitters during this win were Ficke with 2 RBI, Mangan with 3 RBI, Hoffmann with 5 RBI, and Astling with 2 RBI, who all with 3 hits in this win.
Triple Play Sports exited next as the Oswego Inn won another close game edging them 5-3 to move the team into the loser's bracket finals and a rematch with the ball club that had put them into the loser's bracket earlier in the day, The Beavers. In their third straight nail biter game the Oswego Inn won again edging out The Beavers 10-9 to send them packing the cars for the trip home with third place to their credit. The Oswego Inn top hitters in this win were Schmidt, Hoffmann, and Tim Ficke all with 2 hits as Brown added 2 RBI.
Now only Ashland Pyro's, a league rival stood between the Oswego Inn and the tournament title. Needing two more victories in two tries the Oswego Inn put up some better offensive numbers as they pounded out a 20-13 win with their bats to force the need to play the 'if necessary game between these two team in order to determine which of them would be the champion.
Leading the way for the Oswego Inn in this game were Mangan 4 hits, Sutton 4 hits, Hoffmann 4 hits, Ficke 3 hits and Schmidt with 3 hits.
The extra game was everything anyone could ask for, lots of runs with lots of hits but also some big defensive plays that turned the tide back and forth both ways until Ashland Pyro's ran out of runs being one run down losing to the Oswego Inn 27-26 in the deciding game. The Oswego Inn offense was led by Ficke with 5 hits & 3 RBI, Mangan with 5 hits & 6 RBI, Hoffmann with 4 hits, Brown with 4 hits, Schmidt with 4 hits & 3 RBI, and Astling with 3 hits & 5 RBI, in this win.
For this successful tournament the Oswego Inn was led offensively by Rob Mangan .719 with 14 RBI, Glen Hoffmann .621 with 19 RBI, Duey Astling .593 with 18 RBI, Tim Schmidt .577 with 12 RBI, Tim Ficke .563 with 12 RBI, Mike Brown with 10 RBI, Brent Sutton with 12 RBI, and Chris Johnson with 12 RBI.
Oswego Inn teamspokesperson Pat Franciscy, said,"We really played well all day and had some fun winning this tournament."
Tournament runner up Ashland Pyro's opened play with a first round 19-18 win over Neighbors bar & Grill/Windsor Auto Parts from Loves Park in the first round of tournament action. Game number two was also win number two as Ashland Pyro's defeated Souses/Kamaili/Pig Minds 18-5. Souses/Kamaili/Pig Minds had received a first round to advance into playing this game in the second round of play.
In their semifinal game of the winner's bracket Ashland Pyro's met and defeated Pizza Cucina 12-10 to move into the tournament's last game between unbeaten teams. Pizza Cucina made it to this game by opening play with a first round 7-0 win over Oswego Legion who failed to have enough players present at game time. In the second round Pizza Cucina met and defeated Fatty's Pub 13-11 to advance into the semifinals of the winner's bracket of this tournament.
In the game between the tournament's last two remaining g unbeaten teams it was Ashland Pyro's over The Beavers 12-1 to give Ashland Pyro's the title to the winner's bracket and assure them a spot in the tournament's championship game. The Beavers made it to the winner's bracket championship game by opening play with a first round bye before defeating J & J in the second round 9-8. Oswego Inn than fell to The Beavers in a semifinal game 15-12 to move The Beavers into the battle between the last two remaining unbeaten team, left in this tournament.
Now Ashland Pyro's needed to sit back and wait as the loser's bracket was played out to it s conclusion before knowing which of the remaining teams would be their challenger in the championship contest. When the loser's bracket was completed it was a match up with the Oswego Inn that awaited unbeaten Ashland Pyro's in the finals. League rival Oswego Inn was not kind to their unbeaten foe as they defeated Ashland Pyro's twice 20-13 and 27-26 to send Ashland Pyro's home with second place but with the USSSA Men's Class E National berth that was passed down to them from the Oswego Inn who had previously won a 2005 USSSA Men's Class E national Qualifying Tournament.
